A Treat For Me Taking So Long To Post!

The Dreaded Cold

We’ve all been there. Congestion, sore throat, runny nose, possible fever, it’s the common cold. Though it’s not detrimental, you can still go to class and do homework (to a degree), when you’re away from home at college, sometimes all you want is your mother/father to take care of you. After dealing with a cold last week, I have some suggestions.

1. Remember that it’s partially a mental game. I am fully aware of the science behind the cold and to a certain extent you must let a cold run its course. At the same time, you have the option to make it seem like it’s no big deal. I constantly remind myself there are worse things because that will alleviate some of the symptoms, even if it is only for a short period of time.
2. Take medicine to help you, but only if you really need it. I am not advocating for over medicating or medicating for something minor like barely some sniffles. However, if you have multiple symptoms causing you to not perform or be functional, then take something. I know taking a little medicine before I went to class alleviated the symptoms enough that I could still focus to a certain extent.
3. Trust that it only lasts a few days. It’s not the end of the world. It’s a discomfort for a few days, but you will get a bit better everyday. As long as you get enough sleep, drink plenty of fluids, continue eating normally, and try to live the way you do when you aren’t sick, you’ll have a much better time with it. It’s a blip on your radar and you can handle it on your own. I promise, if I can do it, you can do it. :)

Angelique Kidjo

Hi everyone! I want to write real quick about a friend of mine. Her name is Angelique Kidjo and she is a famous musician. I met her when I was seven years old at one of her concerts when she spotted me mouthing all the words to her songs (her songs are in Swahili, French, and English). I was thinking about her recently when my dad sent a link to an interview she did on The Mo’nique Show. Her interview was about family, peace, and love as well as her new CD. I just wanted to share the interview with all of you because it was very well done. She has a way of balancing giving eloquent answers with giving anecdotes/being funny. She interviews well.

In other news I went to the fraternity Sigma Chi on Friday and had a good time with some friends and yesterday I went to an in house retreat with the new members of my sorority as well as the already active members. Today now is about getting homework done (which I’ve already made progress on :) ) and keeping my head on straight. Good thing I have a lot of people around me to share my feelings with.

Here’s the link to that interview:

Sigma Chi Derby Days!

This week is Sigma Chi’s philanthropy Derby Days! This is a week long event where one of the fraternities (Sigma Chi :) ) raises money for their charity which is Blue Energy. Blue Energy is an organization that helps bring sustainable energy to more rural countries such as Nicaragua. It is basically a competition between the four sororities on campus and it raises awareness for their charity. Yesterday was sign a Sig where we went around and signed the boy’s shirts (they were wearing white). Theta came in second place for that event! Today was a lip syncing competition where we came in third. I could not compete because I had choir or else I would have been supporting in the audience. Tomorrow is “derby dash” where all the boys are going to be wearing hats and us sorority girls have to steal them. It should be a grand ole time.

Weekend = Homework

It’s Friday! My two o’ clock class was canceled today which was exciting so I’ve been hanging out since then when my poetry class ended. I’m in the basement because people aren’t down here. That means I can sing which is nice. This weekend is going to be fun, a little busy, but fun. I have a lot of homework to get done, so much so that I’ve made a to do list. I have homework for every class which doesn’t happen very often. This weekend will not be all homework though because I’m going to see the movie “The King’s Speech” with my friend Dana sometime tomorrow. So excited to watch a movie, take a break, have popcorn and soda. Yum yum can’t wait.

I’m Uninteresting Currently

I regret to inform you that at this point in time I am not very interesting. I sat at a table for an hour to promote Theta’s Zumbathon after my only class of the day, did some homework, went to choir, came back home after dinner, and now here we are. I studied for a Cell Bio quiz tomorrow and I think I’m ready for it. Talking through my notes out loud really helps me remember them I’m finding. Lets hope I can remember tomorrow when I’m not allowed to talk! Also tomorrow there is a mixer between the new members of my sorority Kappa Alpha Theta and the sophomores (which includes me). I’m excited because we are making ice cream sundaes and getting to know the girls better. Should be a grand old time.

Sunday!

So it’s Sunday. Not much going on at the good old University of Puget Sound, just a lot of people trying to get their homework done. That includes me. I have two poems due tomorrow in class, one about a significant person and the other, an anonymous Valentine to give away in class. I think I’m going to start with the significant person poem and then move on to the Valentine. Then I might start a close reading for my Intro to English Studies class due on Thursday. I haven’t decided yet who I’m going to write my poem on, I should probably get a handle on that. :)

Also, I have found two games on Facebook that are SUPER ADDICTING. They will be good breaks in between all my homework. The first one is CSI: Crime City where expend energy looking for clues. It’s very fun, I’m already a level 6! The other game is called Robot Unicorn Attack where you jump from platform to platform and dash through stars. I already beat a couple of my Facebook friends and I’m getting better and better!

Talk With Professor Connor

Oh my goodness I just had the best talk with my poetry professor. She is so nice and we had a wonderful conversation about writing/life in general. I really wanted to talk to her one on one so she could get to know a little more about me. I think she’s going to be a good asset to have as I get older to talk to because she gives good, relevant advice and is calming to be around. PLEASE PLEASE GO VISIT YOUR PROFESSORS. If even just to chat, they are here to help and give advice. You can learn so much outside of the classroom by forming bonds with professors.

I had an all class poetry reading today like I mentioned before and honestly, it was very nerve racking. I’m thinking most people enjoyed it and I really liked hearing everyone else’s poems. We have a great range of writing in our class. Some like rhyme, some like free verse, some are funny, some are serious. There is variety which keeps the class engaging. The next poem we have is about a significant person and then we also have to write an anonymous Valentine because we are having class on Valentine’s Day (Monday). I think the Valentine is going to be harder!!!! :)

Lab Tomorrow

Bonjour! Well I guess bon soir because I am writing this at night. Bon soir means good evening or night in French. Just a quick jot down of what went on today and what is going on tomorrow. This past evening the choir I’m in, Dorians, hosted a choral festival for high school women ensembles. The concert went well and the girls asked good questions about music at the collegiate level.

Tomorrow is the standard college day of one class from 11-12:20 and Cell Bio lab from 1-4:30ish. The plus side? I don’t have to go to choir tomorrow because of our concert today! YAY! That means I will have more time tomorrow to do homework and relax before my classes on Friday. The lab looked short when I was doing the pre-lab so I am banking on lab getting out early. That would be great!

Visit

Hello, hello! Today was a very nice day. My mom drove up from Lake Oswego, OR to have lunch with me and spend time with me for the day since I only had one class from 11-12:20. We went to Red Robin which was super delicious, walked around the Tacoma Mall, went to stock up on food from Metropolitan Market, and grabbed a drink from Starbucks. I really needed to see her and it was nice to be able to physically hug, talk to her etc. I was bummed that my dad couldn’t join us also, but he had to work. That work, it just gets in the way sometimes! So I would say if at all possible (it’s dependent on where your hometown is) GET YOUR PARENTS TO COME VISIT YOU EVERY ONCE AND A WHILE OTHER THAN BREAKS. Now I am talking SPORADICALLY people. Not every weekend, not even every other week. This is the first time this year my mom has come to take me out to lunch. This time it was to bridge the two month gap between winter break and spring break. I am an only child and close to my parents so there are points here at school where being without them is painful for me. I’m glad I got to see her.

Super Bowl Sunday

Good morning! It’s finally here. The day where football fans gather together to eat a lot of food and watch football. Ok, I’m going to be watching the ads more than the football game, but it’s a great excuse to eat a lot of this stuff I call ghetto dip. It’s cream cheese and chili melted together to make a delicious dip. Before we can get to the game though, I have to tell you about my night last night.

The first thing I did last night was deal roulette for a casino night put on by a group from the school. It was fun, didn’t really get going until about an hour after it started. It was nice though and I even got to play a little black jack/poker. Then after that I went to Sigma Chi fraternity to hang out with some people. It was the fraternity bid day yesterday so I wanted to congratulate a couple of guys for getting bids to Sigma Chi. It was a lot of fun, a lot of talking, and a lot of dancing. I had a really good night.

Olympics

Hey there. I would just like to let you know that when you get to college, certain things go out the window because you don’t have resources or the time. One of those things is television. I never realized how much TV I watched until I didn’t have it anymore. The Olympics, haven’t watched any of that. Apollo Anton Ohno? Shaun White? Who are these people? Why are they so special? Where are the Olympics being held? :) I’m totally kidding, I know who they are and I know they are in Vancouver B.C. because so many of my friend have gone over to watch some of the games live. I am going to watch the games over Spring Break because my parents are recording them for me. Really the only ones I care about are figure skating and speed skating. I love them! PICK AND CHOOSE THE SHOWS MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU. When you get to college if you want to watch a show you usually have to duke it out with a bunch of other people. Plus sometimes not every TV has cable which makes it challenging. However, you could watch shows on Hulu or another website like that so there are loop holes! I shall save my duking skills till Glee comes back on.

FRIDAY!

Did you hear me? I hope you did because those are some large letters up top. It’s Friday which is so nice because I am going to be able to sleep in tomorrow morning and the next morning! Love it. Tonight I don’t think I’m going to do much and then tomorrow at 11am I have new member education with the rest of the Theta pledges until 2pm. It should be very fun. There isn’t very much to say. There was a Theta mixer last night where the new members talked to a lot of the active members to see who we like and who they like. We are going to put down a list of preferences for bigs and littles. Bigs are an active member who is a year older than us who are like mentors to us. They have their own big and that person is our grand-big and so then we create this nice little family! It will be fun. Big/little week I think is the week after initiation. So like the beginning of April. Should be great!!!!!

Slater Museum & A TON Of Animals

Today in my Biology lab we had a lab quiz about identifying different organisms based on their phylum, class, and common species name. It wasn’t that bad until I realized there were a couple that should have been easy and I just didn’t know them. I think I made up a couple of Latin names for the phylums…whoops! luckily I got at least three points of extra credit so that’s super helpful since the quiz is worth forty points. It was SO ANNOYING at one point because I got the Latin name for a certain anemone for extra credit and then couldn’t get the class…The Latin name has part of the class name in it! I felt like such a dummy. The Latin name is Anthopleura elegantissima and the class name has Antho in it. GRRRR. It’s ok though I think I did fine. We went to the Slater Museum after lab (it’s ok if you’ve never heard of it…it’s in the science building of our school!) where we looked at a lot of taxidermied animals like all kinds of birds, sloths, anteaters, etc. There is also a big refidgerator full of animal pelts like jaguars and sea otters. Sea otter fur is so soft. Now I know why they were hunted to almost extinction back before they became protected. I would really like to get a job there, but I think it’s hard unless you have a work study. If I had work study, then it could be more of a possibility. Maybe I’ll just keep pestering them until they hire me. :)

Quiet On The School Front

It is Tuesday, the day when I don’t have any classes until choir at 5pm. I am auditioning for a solo in a large piece of music with a couple of solos throughout. It will be performed in March for a composer’s conference and the composer of the piece will be there. That doesn’t happen often and it’s exciting. The piece isn’t my favorite, but it’s different than others we have sung before so I can appreciate it. The piano part is the main focus of the piece with the choir there to enhance the piece, but not be the focal point. Sometimes that’s a little annoying because we are a choir. The piano in a choir piece shouldn’t be the focus because it is about the voices when it is a choir setting. However it is a pretty sweet piano part so I will let the annoyance go. :)
